Matzo is baaaaccck

I think she donated a dozen gremlins. Somebody at the zoo forgot, and fed them after midnight.

Anyway, we have a problem. The mail server account and addresses are correct in the mailto.pl script. Rather, they are declared correctly in config.pl and read into mailto.pl script variables.

In an unfortunate turn of events, the auction site is not sending email after the web-site pointer was corrected. I may be bald in a couple of days, but Matzo has a history of paying well.

I love the barter system.

3D Chat

For the most part, I have no curiosity to the Internet "toy" factor. Strangely, I am curious to the 3D chat rage. There is something attractive about 3D chat; that attractiveness troubles me.

My introduction to 3D chat came from Josh — a charter customer of the My^DLLURTH service community. Josh could not get display on his father's LCD monitor while it rested on a computer chassis. With son and computer equipment in tow, Josh came for a system evaluation. Josh and his son were healthy; neither did the computer equipment give any indication of failures. The video failure was attributed to power conditions at home. That was the beginning of … intellectual trouble.

Josh is a social creature. All too frequently, that social character complicates Josh's computer resources. Josh does visit questionable Internet sites; he self-inflicts much Trojan and virus misery. To his credit, Josh accepts his own responsibility and seeks professional help for all facets of his afflictions. In the meantime, he continues affected by social aspects of the Internet. This time, however, I am also affected.

Josh hoped for guidance in enhancing his 3D chat avatar; the chat application is IMVU. The usefulness of IMVU, for my participation, is approximately what IRC provides. I cannot justify the animated avatar. In fact, I cannot use IMVU for my lack of a Microsoft Windows installation. My lack of access did not mitigate Josh's insistence; Josh was single-minded to learn the "tricks" of programming avatar attributes.

Specifically, Josh wanted to alter the apparel for his avatar. There are several articles of virtual clothing available for purchase; the available purchase items do not satisfy Josh. Unfortunately, I haven't desired instruction to impart. Can someone else educate the community?

Okay, I realize the title of this post mentions pictures not showing up. There are plenty of pictures at the pages linked above. No … those are not the pages this post is about. I promoted a another website. Hey! So fire me! This is about community.

I was clearing my SPAM filter the other day and came across an email from a member urthling. That member, Matzo, is a long-time association from the days of Dear YaWho and I have missed her outspoken activism. Needless to say I was pleased to find her communication. At the same time, I was annoyed that the email of a friend was in my SPAM queue.

Better late than never

Okay. I forgive the SPAM filter. Google's likely culpability in the "false positive" was only that almost 6000 Joe Job bounce messages reached webmaster's inbox over one 24-hour period — the same period when Matzo's email arrived. Matzo's e-mail may have swept into the SPAM folder during aftermath cleanup of that flood. Regardless, it would be a week before I found and replied to the e-mail.

I apologize for the delay. Your email was caught up in a flurry of SPAM and went undetected. There were over 25,000 Joe Job emails last week at the same time your mail came in. I think yours accidentally got moved to my SPAM folder in a bulk move of filter failures. I wonder *who* could have done that? (I'm trying to look innocent. Is it working?)

I registered at your auction site and got the registration email. I requested my "lost password" and got that email too. I guess your problem is resolved?

If you're still having trouble, perhaps *your* SPAM filter is recalcitrant as was mine. I'll do whatever I can for the friend you are.

Sure … here we are two e-mails and several hundred words after my first apology and still NOTHING about pictures. Stick with me; relevance improves but the plot remains less than riveting.

Obviously, Matzo's SPAM filters pass useful communications better than I. In a very short time, Web Master had Matzo's reply.

I got the email functioning since I mailed you but now the problem is that photos won't upload for the auctions. It goes to the screen for the browse and upload, but when you click next you get the generic contact webmaster page. The pictures are, in fact, uploading to the correct folder.

Other thing is the stupid thing is running on both sites and won't stay on the right one. That's something my server did that I can't figure out and theye won't help anymore. They said it's my problem with the program.

One other thing is in the places where you post, there are no spaces when you hit enter - it all runs together in one paragraph. Where would I correct that?

If you registered, you also have a mypage and mystore -- feel free to play with yours. One person's link pointed to the wrong spot -- pointed to the auction site instead of their site so I had to manually adjust that.

I would love your banner on the site. I'll set it up so your account isn't charged. I don't have payment processors figured out anyway. Need to figure out the code for AlertPay and 2co -- I don't use PayPal anymore. They decided to randomly limit my account from time to time for no legitimate reasons.

An excellent adventure

Okay! The e-mails are a bit much here. I'll tone them down now.

Yes! We have no pictures (and much more). Suddenly, life's purpose revives. D^Geek jumps in with both feet to a seething cauldron of Perl scripts. I immediately found and corrected some confusion between path and URL. Using the MyStore interface, I created a store with a simple description and version 2 of the My^DLLURTH logo. That worked well, but the store image was a reference to a foriegn hosted image. More testing was needed; I added a banner advertisement.

Still, the banner advertisement did not require an image upload. All that remained was to pollute Matzo's LBA auction with some geeky auction product. What could I auction?

AH HAH!

Why not auction an URTH system consultation? Surely some energy-conscious tree hugger would like a solar-powered surveillance system to protect their patch of endangered wildlife habitat from an encroaching suburbia. Surely the class of people in Matzo's circuit can appreciate such an offer. This is, after all, a test offering. Okay, maybe the test might be a real purchase. There's no real science to My^DLLURTH contribution. However, more than once, I've heard excuses from would-be contributors, like : "I can't contribute on your site. I don't know enough about web design." No less acceptable reason for not contributing exists. If you can write coherently, you can make better contributions than I can. Yet, many want to know the "tricks" I use; so, I show my hand.

There are, by default, three input formats available for content at Drupal sites. Where contributions are allowed at My^DLLURTH, enabled contributors might select the appropriate option from Input format — directly below the content body or comment text input.

For this post, I selected "PHP code" … an option denied most contributors at this site. PHP code, maliciously or poorly designed, can disable this site; such code could compromise every co-resident site of this server. However, I am an ethical and experienced PHP scripter and know to certify scripts before deploying them on a production server. For typical text content, "Filtered HTML" is sufficient and "Full HTML" will work. When using the WYSIWIG (TinyMCE) tool, the My^DLLURTH default format of "Full HTML" is essential.

For static content, "PHP code" is useless. When content is dynamic, "PHP: Hypertext Preprocessor" provides marvelous flexibility. For instance, <?php echo ''. $_SERVER['SERVER_NAME'] . ''; ?> produces forum.mydllurth.com, to identify the server from which you are reading this article — when it is possible to read this article from geek.mydllurth.com, book.mydllurth.com, forum.mydllurth.com or group.mydllurth.com with an appropriate URI. Using javascript would remove the tax on forum.mydllurth.com, but wise Internet users should not allow just anyone the ability to run tasks on their workstation. Wise users might disable scripts from executing on their workstation. URTH would have a more intelligent Internet.

Using "Filtered HTML" will add some HTML to articles without any effort on the contributor's part. For instance, when a contributor adds content with blank lines or line-feeds between text, Drupal will silently add and around continuous text and place   where empty lines are input.

Of course, nothing stops the die-hard, old-school, HTML-enchanted, W3C-touting "code warrior" from contributing. Go ahead; show your stuff with CSS, tags and attributes. More dangerous elements of layout control are disallowed, but nearly everything one might want to use is at urthling disposal. If you can't recall what is required to enhance your contribution, just drop a comment on this thread or start a new thread to ask your questions. I promise to say "RTFM" in a very pleasant, not-condescending way — with synopsis and a helpful link to where you might "Read The Fine Manual" for your richer understanding.

IPv6

IPv4 has a limited number of IP addresses available. With that being the case people saw a solution would have to come about, that solution is IPv6. IPv6 uses a 128 bit addresses which create a lot of changes. According to ARIN we have less than 20 percent of our IPv4 addresses remaining. IPv6 was designed to have a "zero configuration" and was created with large busy LAN (Local Area Network) in mind. With 32 bits, it's possible to express 4,294,967,296 different values. Over half a billion of those are unusable as addresses for whatever reason, leaving a total of 3.7 billion possible addresses for hosts on the Internet.

In the early 90's a group called IETF, which is short for Internet Engineering Task Force, started to work on the problem. 40 or 48 bits would give more than 281 trillion addresses. The IETF went with 128 bits. That allows for 340,282,366,920,938,463,463,374,607,431,768,211,456 addresses. There are some issues that must be dealt with before IPv6 can ever be a standard. The biggest one is that the IPv6 path to a remote is usually longer than the IPv4 path. To try and get around that there are two "trial" methods, the first one is dual stack (stack is talking about a tcp/ip stack) which is really just an IPv4 and an IPv6 running on the same machine, the idea is that the IPv4 stack handles IPv4 and the IPv6 stack handles the IPv6 stuff. The other method is "tunneling", to try and make it simple: IPv6 packets are put inside IPv4 packets, then sent across the IPv4 part of the network and then the IPv4 part is stripped and it goes on its way over IPv6. Typically to use tunneling you go through a tunnel broker. I believe, right now, most tunnel brokers are still free, there are definitely free ones out there. It's easy to know tunnel addresses because they always start with 2002. You can actually set up a tunnel manually, but it's simpler to go through a broker, some brokers allow manual setup through them. If not, you just have to hope your ISP allows for it.

DNS for IPv6 is a little different, like an A(Authorative) record in IPv4 is the same as an AAAA record in IPv6.

Okay, here comes the hard part, I'll try to explain what IPv6 IS, and compare it to IPv4. Acronyms I'll break down for you … other words you don't know ask me here if you want and I'll try and explain it.

IPv4 addresses are split into four 8-bit values and putting periods between those like 192.168.0.1 IPv6 addresses are eight 16-bit values with colons between them, and each 16-bit value is shown in hexadecimal (hex), using 0-9 and A - F like this: 2001:db8:31:1:20a:95ff:fef5:246e. It's not uncommon for IPv6 addresses to have a bunch of consecutive zeros. In that case, one of those can be left out. So 2001:db8:31:0:0:0:0:1 becomes 2001:db8:31::1 and the IPv6 loopback address 0:0:0:0:0:0:0:1 becomes ::1. DHCP is not useful in IPv6 for addressing, a different method is used. Here's an example: a router sends out "router advertisements" (RAs) that contain the upper 64 bits of an IPv6 address, and hosts generate the lower 64 bits to make a complete address.

The bottom 64 bits of an IPv6 address you get from a MAC (Media Access Control) address by flipping a bit and adding the bits ff:fe in the middle. MAC is typically unique to a specific device (not always, you can use MAC cloning which I won't go into). So the Ethernet MAC address 00:0a:95:f5:24:6e gives 20a:95ff:fef5:246e as the lower 64 bits of an IPv6 address, called the "interface identifier" in IPv6. This is more useful than DHCP as every time you boot, you always get the same address.

I know most administrators aren't fond of Windows™, however, in the case of IPv6 it's nice for privacy in that it uses a random number rather than the MAC to get the address. For the paranoid, you could even have it change the random number every 24 hours :P

There are 3 really important types of "special" address in IPv6, well more, but I only know of 3 that really matter: Link Local, Site Local, and Multicast.

Link local is used for a single physical address and start with fe80, they are used mostly for IPv6's internal house keeping.

Site local is unique "site local" addresses where you get a randomly selected block of IPv6 address space starting with fd.

Multicast is a group address, so everything that hits it goes to everyone in the group. Multicast addresses start with ff and are useful for applications where several hosts must receive the same information at the same time like in live video or autoconfiguration and discovery. That's one big difference in IPv4 and IPv6. IPv4 hosts use broadcasts for discovery. So to send a packet over Ethernet, it has to know the destination MAC address. So IPv4 "broadcasts" who has 192.0.2.31? to everything on the network. IPv6 sends these packets to a multicast address, so only IPv6 hosts listening(looking) for that kind of requests gets them otherwise the hardware ignores the packets, and you can use switches to filter them out. All you have to do is keep up with which multicast groups hosts are listening for that switch port.

Any IPv6 enabled host right out of the box for Windows Vista, Mac OS X, and most Linux distros are reachable on the same Ethernet. It's not hard to find the addresses really, well Windows™ (haha for those that care, that ™ symbol is ascii sequence "alt + 0 1 5 3") blocks out multicast pings, but other OSes generally don't. If you use Windows XP™ you can turn IPv6 on and off with the run commands "IPv6 install" and "IPv6 uninstall".

the IETF is currently working on mobility and multihoming extensions for IPv6. Mobility allows moving from one network to another while keeping the same IP address. An example would be a VoIP call that starts on your network at home, keeps going over wireless and then you could finish your call on the network at work.

Multihoming is connecting to more than one ISP at the same time. It would be useful if one failed, your stuff would automatically move over to the other ISP.

I'm not really sure what more I can say. So I guess now it's just open for questions? As a total afterthought, one thing I like about IPv6 is you can have multiple names resolve on the same machine with one NIC (Network Interface Card) like ::1, ::2, ::3 can all be different "names" but they all resolve to the same machine it's like an internal NAT (network address translation) that actually allows incoming without forwarding etc.. Sure you can do that with subdomains on an IPv4, but on IPv6 you can have multiple domains on the same machine without it being considered a clone in any way. So really you can have multiple vhosts on what is really the same IP address, the only difference would be the ::1 ::2 ::3 etc., which makes a unique address that you can add as needed. Oh yeah, there is a limit to the number of ::numbers you can use, I don't remember what is is exactly though. I'll update again with that, and answers to any questions I get.

We could address problems in chaos and that would be fitting, but … the real benefit of Geek Wyrld would be diluted in such disorderly support.

If an appropriate forum needs creation, an administrator will step in to create the forum and advise of that creation. Out of chaos comes order. If a best forum exists, someone will surely let you know.

The MyDLL URTH content now includes news feeds from a few sites with content of interest to urthling viewers. As feed aggregation evolves, some content may become unavailable; it is unfortunate that some feeds place restriction on how receiving sites may redistribute their public information.

Recently added content comes from Microsoft, LS.net, and Senior TechnickelShack. I am looking for sites with content of localized relevance and without subscription requirement.

If there are missed feeds of interest, please bring these omissions to our attention in this forum.
