Grandstream Idle Screen

VoIP users have an option of customizing their idle screens. Customization is not terribly difficult, but some qualification is necessary. The first requirement is a proper phone; My^D_LLURTH recommends and leases the Grandstream GXP 2000.

After hardware qualification, a qualified firmware¹ must be loaded. Most recent Grandstream firmware for GXP series phones allow custom idle screen download. Configure your phone for TFTP firmware upgrade via the Grandstream (168.75.215.189) server or other appropriate TFTP server. Instructions for upgrade settings are on page 21 of the attached GXP 2000 Users Manual. You will need to know the IP address and administrative password for the GXP 2000 user interface.

Firmware upgrade takes a significant amount of time (about 15 minutes … multiple reboots), and must not be interrupted; do not cycle power during the upgrade process. Enabled VoIP accounts may authenticate and be called during the procedure, but conversations should be avoided. Firmware loads may introduce undesirable behaviors² and should not be unnecessarily attempted.

NOTES :

If you need router function from your GXP series phone, do not upgrade to version 1.1.6.16 or later.
Read the GXP-2000 recent firmware notes; features, tweaks and bugs are extensively documented.

Improvements require communication. D^Geek keeps saying this, but nobody seems to understand that the format for contributing at MyDLL URTH just works. There is nothing complicated about adding a post in groups, in forums, on the front page, or as an independent page.

So what is the perceived "difficulty" ? Apparently, we need specifics. Just what is missing?

There are more than two dozen members of this site and only one contributor. In fact, of the many members, only three members *ever* visit aside from anonymously. What is the problem? Is there nothing to say that D^Geek is not saying?

References to undefined inconveniences are impossible to facilitate. Be an activist. Define the better wyrld.

I think she donated a dozen gremlins. Somebody at the zoo forgot, and fed them after midnight.

Anyway, we have a problem. The mail server account and addresses are correct in the mailto.pl script. Rather, they are declared correctly in config.pl and read into mailto.pl script variables.

In an unfortunate turn of events, the auction site is not sending email after the web-site pointer was corrected. I may be bald in a couple of days, but Matzo has a history of paying well.

I love the barter system.

Okay, I realize the title of this post mentions pictures not showing up. There are plenty of pictures at the pages linked above. No … those are not the pages this post is about. I promoted a another website. Hey! So fire me! This is about community.

I was clearing my SPAM filter the other day and came across an email from a member urthling. That member, Matzo, is a long-time association from the days of Dear YaWho and I have missed her outspoken activism. Needless to say I was pleased to find her communication. At the same time, I was annoyed that the email of a friend was in my SPAM queue.

Better late than never

Okay. I forgive the SPAM filter. Google's likely culpability in the "false positive" was only that almost 6000 Joe Job bounce messages reached webmaster's inbox over one 24-hour period — the same period when Matzo's email arrived. Matzo's e-mail may have swept into the SPAM folder during aftermath cleanup of that flood. Regardless, it would be a week before I found and replied to the e-mail.

I apologize for the delay. Your email was caught up in a flurry of SPAM and went undetected. There were over 25,000 Joe Job emails last week at the same time your mail came in. I think yours accidentally got moved to my SPAM folder in a bulk move of filter failures. I wonder *who* could have done that? (I'm trying to look innocent. Is it working?)

I registered at your auction site and got the registration email. I requested my "lost password" and got that email too. I guess your problem is resolved?

If you're still having trouble, perhaps *your* SPAM filter is recalcitrant as was mine. I'll do whatever I can for the friend you are.

Sure … here we are two e-mails and several hundred words after my first apology and still NOTHING about pictures. Stick with me; relevance improves but the plot remains less than riveting.

Obviously, Matzo's SPAM filters pass useful communications better than I. In a very short time, Web Master had Matzo's reply.

I got the email functioning since I mailed you but now the problem is that photos won't upload for the auctions. It goes to the screen for the browse and upload, but when you click next you get the generic contact webmaster page. The pictures are, in fact, uploading to the correct folder.

Other thing is the stupid thing is running on both sites and won't stay on the right one. That's something my server did that I can't figure out and theye won't help anymore. They said it's my problem with the program.

One other thing is in the places where you post, there are no spaces when you hit enter - it all runs together in one paragraph. Where would I correct that?

If you registered, you also have a mypage and mystore -- feel free to play with yours. One person's link pointed to the wrong spot -- pointed to the auction site instead of their site so I had to manually adjust that.

I would love your banner on the site. I'll set it up so your account isn't charged. I don't have payment processors figured out anyway. Need to figure out the code for AlertPay and 2co -- I don't use PayPal anymore. They decided to randomly limit my account from time to time for no legitimate reasons.

An excellent adventure

Okay! The e-mails are a bit much here. I'll tone them down now.

Yes! We have no pictures (and much more). Suddenly, life's purpose revives. D^Geek jumps in with both feet to a seething cauldron of Perl scripts. I immediately found and corrected some confusion between path and URL. Using the MyStore interface, I created a store with a simple description and version 2 of the My^DLLURTH logo. That worked well, but the store image was a reference to a foriegn hosted image. More testing was needed; I added a banner advertisement.

Still, the banner advertisement did not require an image upload. All that remained was to pollute Matzo's LBA auction with some geeky auction product. What could I auction?

AH HAH!

Why not auction an URTH system consultation? Surely some energy-conscious tree hugger would like a solar-powered surveillance system to protect their patch of endangered wildlife habitat from an encroaching suburbia. Surely the class of people in Matzo's circuit can appreciate such an offer. This is, after all, a test offering. Okay, maybe the test might be a real purchase. We will certainly honor the 95% discount if one buyer takes the auction at minimum bid. Perhaps auction is better advertisement value than banners?

The author

While perfect prose or journalistic jargon might encourage reading, the pleasure of receiving intelligence is not the only value metric.

Public content evolves with contributor participation. Methods for contributing vary per venue; effective delivery depends on each reader and the author. This guide provides help for authoring. In particular, this guide provides help for authoring content in an Internet CMS (or content management system). More specifically, this guide addresses contributing into a Drupal CMS.

Venue

Intelligence accumulates from multiple observations. That accumulation may be recorded in many ways. Methods of recording intelligence differ in capacity for sharing accumulated intelligence.

As the need to share intelligence changed over time, different methods evolved. As methods evolved, options would gain and lose favor. Each method has advantage and disadvantage with recording various intelligence. Each method has advantage and disadvantage with sharing various intelligence. The differences depend both on medium and vocabulary.

Physical

Physical records are tangible and have inherent advantages and disadvantages.

Presently, some sensory intelligence is best presented physically. While current technology allows remote olfactory study, prohibitive overhead and operational costs constrain remote audiences. Haptic sensations of texture, heat and force are available for remote appreciation with relatively low overhead and operational costs; the process for receiving haptic sensations can be cumbersome and undesirable. Remote tasting, for now, remains the realm of science fiction. For some intelligence, only real world venues satisfy.

Physical records are somewhat comforting, by the act of touching. Unfortunately, every touch takes something away. The mear touch of humidity and dust will, in time, usher destruction of every physical record — witness the Great Sphinx and the Magna Carta to see the destructive effect.

Virtual

Virtual records allow remote study of intelligence. A most significant advantage of virtual record results from the digitally stored representations.

Static

When geography changes nothing more than availability, content is static. When time changes nothing more than integrity, content is static. Traditional books, cave paintings, vinyl records, statues are static records of intelligence.

Dynamic

In both of physical and virtual store, content is static or dynamic. Certainly, combining static content with dynamic content is possible — sometimes desirable. The use of dynamic content, in any part, qualifies the context as dynamic. By definition, the Drupal CMS is dynamic.

Reading

Reading content is nearly an entire other discussion from authoring content.

The purpose of content is delivering intelligence, but every reader's attention may wander at any moment. Reader attention must be cajoled in many cases. Write content to leverage attention with powerful leading prose.

Authoring

Before contributing, authors must gain permission to add content. While by design or defect some locations do not restrict contribution, most intelligence collects from credentialed authors. In other words, authors must be registered participants with validated access. In the Drupal environment, registered participants are users; a validated access is called a session.

To become a user, a Drupal site visitor must register a user name. Most Drupal sites require a valid user e-mail address. Validation does happen by various means, but most often a password is associated with each site user. Users get a session after authenticating on a site login form. Access is facilitated by a "User login" block on default Drupal sites. Some Drupal site administrators will add a menu item for "User login" with labels that could be useful hints. Most Drupal sites allow contribution, of some flavor, from any authenticated user.

Contributions come in many flavors. One basic, default content of a Drupal site is a "story" — consisting of a title and body. A second, default content type is a page — also consisting of a title and body. Drupal stories and pages may be contributed with no more than typing and mouse skills.

The default Drupal site offers a "Create content" link to session users in the navigation menu. When a user clicks on that link, a page opens with descriptions of all content types for which that user has authorization. The name at the beginning of each description is a link to that specialized contribution's submission form. Options, allowed for the content type, are adjusted in the submission form.

By default, Drupal sites accept filtered HTML for content. This means

For the experienced web content author, some sites allow additional HTML tags when using the "Full HTML" input format. Non-administrative contributors should not use nor even find the "PHP code" filter — this advanced format is not allowed by most responsible administrators and needs no discussion here.

Other content types may be added to suit specialized interests. Images may be a content type — other content types may be audio samples, polls, order forms, blog entry, forum content, organic group, organic group content, etc … . There are growing numbers of content types, developed for specialized collections and, if what's already available is not adequate, special content can be designed with the "content construction kit (or CCK).

Firefox and Windows Media Player

I've been using Firefox for many years now. The only thing I've been using Internet Explorer for is to watch videos at CNN.com and other places that use the embedded Windows Media Player as WMP doesn't work in Firefox....or didn't until I found this little gem of an add-on.

The add-on is called MediaPlayerConnectivity. It's quick and easy to download and install. I used the default install settings went to CNN.com, clicked on a video, had to install one quick little plug-in and I can now watch videos from Firefox. No more IE!!

IE has never run well on this computer. I don't know if it's the XP64 OS or the 64bit hardware causing the problem but IE has always been boggy and resource intensive on my computer. Now I never have to use IE again!

As with anything computer related, YMMV*. In other words, if this little add-on doesn't work for you for whatever reason it's easy to uninstall.

Peripheral Neuropathy and some major eye-openers

I'm learning so much at that message board I've posted about in my previous blog entries that I felt it was time for another update.

It seems that most doctors and even the Neuro docs that are supposed to be specialists regarding PN (Peripheral Neuropathy) know less than many of the people on that forum! Mind boggling. For instance, my Neuro didn't do even near all the tests he should have to find out what's really causing my PN. He did the very least he could: Blood tests to rule out auto-immune type problems among others; and a nerver condution study, which for those that have never had one, they attach elctrodes and such to certain areas to trace the nerve path and then shoot a 'mild' current through the nerve path to measure nerve function and responses. Mild is in the eye of the person being tested. After these he simply put me on Gabapentin (generic Neurontin) which was a huge mistake for *me*. Warning: Gabapenting may cause suicidal derpression. It did this to me. It is also known to deplete B-12 . Oh lovely. The Neuro treats my symptoms without knowing the real cause of the PN. On top of it he gives me a drug guaranteed to cause, over time if not sooner, the exact same symptoms he gave me the drug for in the first place! With me here? I finally get fed up. I *had* to quit the Gabapentin. Which left me worse off than pre-Gabapentin. The pain was the worst it had ever been. Some 'cure' huh?

That's how I found the forum. Attempting to learn more about my condition. That's been my lifesaver! Right now I probably know more about PN than any doctor I've been seen for this thus far.

As for the B-vitamins? It's actually curing my PN. 36 days after beginning the B-complex and especially the B-12 I'm to the point of having days at a time with *no* symptoms at all. No more spleeping problems. It's been such a blessing! As anyone that has suffered from PN can tell you you learn to treasure the pain free periods, *if* you have them, no matter how long or short they are.

I believe I'm an exception. I'm not sure how long it's taken others taking the same treatment route I have to show positive results. I'd love to hear from anyone that has.
